With a lifetime career in the Air Traffic Management Sector, Riis Johansen has worked over the course of 46 years in various strategic and leadership roles in the United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Iraq, Sudan, Azerbaijan and Copenhagen.
Riis commenced his journey with Air Traffic Management as an Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) in the civil aviation authority of Denmark in 1973. From there, he has moved to occupy senior roles in the United Arab Emirates where he worked with Serco, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC), and the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).
During the period of 1990 to 1996, Riis was appointed as the Chief of Aeronautical Information Services and Chief of Air Traffic Management in the UAE Ministry of Communications. He then began working with the GCAA where he held various roles from the period of 1998 to 2011 as Director of Projects & Planning and Director of Air Navigation Services & Regulations.
Prior to joining Dubai Air Navigation Services as an advisor, Riis in his capacity worked in a myriad of Air Navigation Services consultancy and advisory roles with the GCAA,IATA,Air Navigation Services of Azerbaijan, the Civil Aviation Authorities of Sudan & Pakistan, in addition to Comsoft, Alpha Global Industries & Global ATS.
Currently, Riis is working closely with the Senior Vice President of Operations in dans advising on key areas such as airspace management, ATC performance, risk assessments for ATM systems & procedures, budgeting and contracts.
